Rhythm Workshop by Clark Chaffee is a workbook with 24 rhythm duets. Each duet has a preparation page. All of the preparation pages follow the same format as shown here for duet 1A (top of the page). By working through this preparation format 24 times, students learn important skills and processes that help them with all future rhythm reading.  Helpful guides for 'Note Values Guide', 'Counting Syllables' common practices, and 'Time Signatures' are included at the beginning of every pack. The packs provide format for simple and effective teacher feedback. The challenges for understanding all common time signatures are addressed. Level 1 covers notes of one beat and longer. Level 2 divides the beat into 2 parts. Level 3 divides the beat into 3 parts (dotted values get one beat). Level 4 divides the beat into 4 parts.

All 24 preparation pages follow the same format. It is a format that helps students prepare for all performance settings. Answering the opening 4 questions in order is essential for understanding the basic rhythm structure for any music. Students may answer questions 5, 6 and 7 in any order.

Rhythm Workshop (by Clark Chaffee) preparation pages conclude with filling in missing bar lines and creating 8 measures of original rhythm patterns similar to those for that duet. At the bottom of the page (as well as on the cover for the cover for each of the 4 packets) are lines for clear teacher feedback.

Rhythm Workshop (by Clark Chaffee) is made up of 24 rhythm duets, each with a written preparation page. The duets are arranged into four packets of six duets per pack. Level 1 does not subdivide the beat. Level 2 divides the beat into 2 parts. In level 3 the dotted quarter gets the beat and all duets divide the beat into three parts. Level 4 divides the beat into 4 parts. Levels 1, 2, and 4 have time signatures with 2, 3, or 4 beats per bar. Within each pack there are duets with quarter, eighth, and half notes getting one beat.   For the best results, students should work in pairs to check off the performance of the duets. Each student is to count out loud as prescribed in the preparation page. For final approval, each student performs one part while the partner performs the other part. Peer coaches are very helpful for support and check off of this process. When finished with the series, students have mastered most of the rhythms that they will every see in performance repertoire and several ways to write each of those rhythms.
